1st
HP 1032 hPa N of Azores and 1029 hPa Biscay. LP 969 hPa just W of Iceland. Cloudy start with a lttle brightness before a brief spell of light rain/drizzle in mid-morning. Becoming brighter in late morning with a few short sunny spells but cloudy in mid and late afternoon again.
2nd
A cloudy day but mainly bright although just two brief sunny intervals: one in mid-morning and one in late afternoon.
3rd
LP 967 hPa Iceland, HP 1027 hPa Azores and 1035 hPa W Russia. Early fog with visibility down to 100m clears by 08.30. A bright day with some long sunny spells especially after late morning.
4th
Passage of cold front at midday results in a rapid 8C temperature drop and brings a spell of 4 hours of rainfall, briefly heavy at the start. Sunny end to the day after the front clears.
5th
HP 1022 hPa Biscay, LP 976 hPa Iceland. Precipitaion is from condensation overnight. A sunny day with mainly clear sky except for a cloudier spell in mid-afternoon.
6th
LP 977 hPa W of Outer Hebrides. Mainly clear sky at dawn, quickly becoming overcast. Dry until after midday when intermittent light rain and drizzle continue into the evening.
7th
Two spells of rather heavy rain from warm and cold fronts between 05.00 - 08.00. Sky clears around 08.30 to give a long sunny period before cloud increases in the early afternoon. Clearing again late in the afternoon to give a sunny end to the day.
8th
Passage of trough from the SW brings very heavy rainfall during the morning rush hour, torrential for a time with 10.2 mm rainfall in just 10 minutes at 09.00 (site record high rainfall for 10 min period since autologger was installed in 2004) including 7.4 mm in 5 mins. Dry in the afternoon with some short sunny spells.
9th
LP 988 hPa Southern Scotland. Rain showers in the early morning becoming lighter and less frequent after 08.30. Plenty of sunny spells during the day but becoming windy after the middle of the day. Thunder heard from a thundery band of rain to the north west in late afternoon.
10th
A fairly bright day with some sunny spells. Thundery rain passes over around 16.30 lasting nearly an hour, again extremely heavy for a short while. Further rain showers later with some lightning and thunder.
11th
Thundery showers continue overnight, dying out by 09.00. Some sunny spells in the daytime but interrupted by a heavy rain shower in early afternoon.
12th
LP 994 hPa Brittany. Fog clears by 08.30 to give a bright morning with sime sunny intervals despite high cloud, Cloud thickens in the afternoon with rain arriving from the south by 16.30. The rainfall is rather intermittent but in quite heavy sustained pulses.
13th
LP 994 English Channel. The rain continues overnight and into the morning, again with some prolonged heavy bursts, ending just before midday. Brighter for a while with some sunny intervals before low cloud and light rain returns for a short time in late afternoon.
14th
An overcast and dull day with steady drizzle lasting from late morning into the evening.
15th
Mainly overcast day but occasionally brighter with broken clouds. Rain pushes in from the west in the evening.
16th
A spell of heavy rain between 05.30 - 06.30 from a trough. A bright day with some sunny spells/intervals but becoming overcast by late afternoon .
17th
Light rain in the night, sky clears for the most part before sunrise. Bright in the morning and early afternoon with some sunny intervals but clouding over in the middle of the afternoon and becoming rather dull.
18th
A bright morning with some sunny intervals but hazy due to high cloud. Becoming cloudy in early afternon and overcast for a time before a bright end to the day.
19th
18.0 °C at midnight, and the second mildest October night in these site records. A rain shower in the night and a spell of rain around sunrise. After early cloud clears sunny spells develop from mid-morning onwards.
20th
A bright day with sunny spells but clouding over in the middle of the afternoon.
21st
Ex-hurricane Gonzalo 979 hPa passes north of Scotland. Rather windy most of the day with rain at first. Brightening in midmorning with some short sunny spells and intervals. A few light showers in the afternoon and evening, one with a brief fall of small hail. Wind veers to NW in the afternoon and the temperature falls sharply during showers.
22nd
A bright morning with a long period of sunshine despite patches of thin, high cloud. Becoming rather cloudy in the afternoon.
23rd
A cloudy day with only brief brightness, and overcast by early afternoon. Some light rain in the evening.
24th
Cloudy and rather dull with intermittent light rain and drizzle in early morning and late afternoon.
25th
Cloudy but rather bright with a couple sunny intervals in the morning and a longer sunny spell in the afternoon.
26th
Overcast for most of the day and dull at times, cloud breaks up slightly at the very end of daylight.
27th
An area of low cloud moves away around 09.00 allowing sunshine to break through. A long sunny period from late morning through to sunset.
28th
Precipitation is from condensation during the night. A clear and sunny start, some long sunny spells through the middle of the day but patches of cloud develop from mid-morning and especially in late afternoon.
29th
A dull and overcast day after a very mild night. Intermittent rain and drizzle lasts most of daylight.
30th
A misty and murky start but cloud clears slowly to give some long sunny spells after late morning.
31st
Precipitation overnight probably from condensation. Extensive thin, high cloud in the morning giving some hazy sunshine. Clearing to give a long period of sunshine in the afternoon, and the warmest day so late in the year in these site records.
